As this blog is still very new to me… I am not 100% sure how often to write, what to write about, and what you guys want to read about. So feel free to give me a shout.
I thought maybe I could share a useful exersice I use, every once in a while. Once a week maybe? What do you guy’s think about that timeframe? Good or bad?
So, this is one, I find really helpfull to activate and quicken the horses up, by focusing on guiding them, to do it for you.
Basically, you ride on a 15 m circle, but instead of thinking circle, think square. In the corners, do a quarter piruette. Start in walk. Then go up to trot. In the trot, instead of thinking piruette, think of your body holding your horses hindleg really bouncy, and with your hands moving the forehand round. This allows the horses to start stepping under, but keeping the activity and forwards. If your horse is strong enough, do the same in the canter, a quarter piruetre in the corners, but think forward in them, let the turn do the collection for you. Now once you feel comfortable with this. Use your quarter piruettes to do transitions between walk/canter/walk. And again, you think forward, and let the exersice collect the horse. Specially when you go from walk to canter, really go from the quarter piruette, it allows the horse to really sit down and carry weight up and forwards into the hand without losing any power and quickness of the hindquarters. I find it also makes the horses little more on the ball, waiting, positively “hotter” more engaged and in more self balance.
